Compost Collection Program
The Garden Path is excited to announce that we now accept residential compost at our location on Starkey!
How does it work?
-
- Whenever you have kitchen waste place it in one of the buckets and cover lightly with peat/coir.
- When your first bucket is full, drop it off at our location – there are marked bins specifically for this purpose in the parking lot.
- Pick up your empty and cleaned bucket/cover (the first time you drop off you won’t have one to pick up!)
- Start filling your new bucket and repeat!
If you would like to participate in this program here are a few things you need to know:
-
- Participants will need to purchase two 5-gallon buckets (no lids needed).
- The Garden Path will provide a bag of sterilized peat or coconut coir to all participants.
- Absolutely NO plastic, metal, or other non-organic substances of any kind are allowed in the compost. This includes those small round stickers that are attached to produce! If we find that you can’t comply with this request you will be booted from the program.
- The Garden Path will provide two breathable attachable covers for your buckets.
- Compost can be dropped off at any time but must be left in the marked bin designated for this purpose.
What can I compost?
-
- Grains, pasta, bread products
- Plate scrapings & leftovers, as long as they don’t contain a large quantity of un-compostable items
- Cardboard rolls, brown paper bags
- Paper towels
- Coffee grounds and filters
- Dryer and vacuum cleaner lint
- Crushed eggshells (but not eggs)
- Fireplace ashes
- Fruits and vegetables
- Grass clippings (unless your lawn is treated with pesticides)
- Hair and fur
- Nut shells
- Seaweed (rinse off saltwater)
- Shredded newspaper
- Tea and tea bags
- Wood chips, sawdust, toothpicks, burnt matches
What CAN’T I compost & why?
-
- Please don’t add large quantities of the following items to the compost. A few scraps or bits left on a plate are fine to scrape into the bucket, but please don’t add things like waste oil from frying or meat trimmings, etc:
- Meat, fish, egg or poultry scraps (odor problems and pests)
- Dairy products (odor problems and pests)
- Fats, grease, lard or oils (odor problems and pests)
- Absolutely NO plastic, metal, or other non-organic substances of any kind are allowed in the compost. This includes those small round stickers that are attached to produce!
- Plant Material including the following (normally this would be ok in a compost pile, but we need to make sure that no plant diseases or pesticides get into the compost, so please don’t include any plant material in your bucket)
- Houseplants or yard trimmings (diseases or insects might spread)
- Grass clippings treated with pesticides (might kill composting organisms)
- Black walnut tree leaves or twigs (substances harmful to plants)
- Coal or charcoal ash (contains substances harmful to plants)
- Pet wastes (dog or cat feces, cat litter) (might contain parasites or germs)
If you have any questions about what you can compost please call, email or text. If in doubt, don’t put it in the bucket!
